IPWireless Launches First 3G Wireless Service in N. America

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- IPWireless, a provider of third-generation broadband wireless technology that enables service providers to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access, said it has launched a 3G broadband wireless network in Missoula, Montana, the first such commercial service available in North America.

IPWireless is launching the service in conjunction with Internet Connect Services, an ISP, and Teewinot Wireless Data, a provider of 3G wireless broadband services.

As part of the arrangement, IPWireless will provide software and hardware, including a palm-sized modem with an integrated antenna that attaches to the user's computer. Chris Gilbert, chief executive at IPWireless, said the launch proves the viability of the wireless network because it does not require any technical expertise for the user to install the modem and, because the system does not require fiber, the infrastructure can be quickly installed at existing cell sites.

According to Mr. Gilbert, the mobility that the wireless service offers will also be an attractive feature to its users. He said once the network is established, wireless LANs and hotspots can be created quickly.

In April, IPWireless created a similar network with the telecommunications carrier Maui Sky Fiber on the island of Maui. The company expects to deploy the service in Vancouver, B.C. shortly and is already deployed in Auckland, New Zealand. Sprint is also testing IPWireless's technology in Montreal, according to a company spokesperson.

IPWireless's Advanced 3G Broadband technology uses UMTS TD-CDMA (TDD) standards and is designed for operation in three licensed brands: IMT-2000 1.9GHz, MMDS 2.5 GHz, and FWA 3.4 GHz.

Founded in April 1999, IPWireless has raised over $120 million to date. The company is backed by Bay Partners, DCM--Doll Capital Management, Dougery Ventures, Gabriel Venture Partners, GIC Special Investments, J.F. Shea Venture Capital, Northwood Ventures, and Oak Hill Management.
