printVentureWire Ranks Top 20 Metro Areas for Venture Capital3/12/2001VentureWire (venturewire.com), the leading daily source of private company business news, released today the VentureWire Top 20 Metro Areas 2001, a ranking of venture capital investment by metropolitan area. Silicon Valley ranked first, followed in order by New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. The VentureWire Top 20 Metro Areas rankings are based on the number of venture-capital investments in private companies in each metro area during the twelve months preceding February 28, 2001.
"It's not surprising that Silicon Valley remains far ahead of any other region in terms of startup activity," said Ken Andersen, Managing Editor, VentureWire Group. "But the Boston area, which has traditionally been a strong number two, slipped behind New York for the first time last year."
VentureWire tracks venture capital investment daily through its VentureWire Index (VWIX). VWIX is the only index of overall venture capital investing that is updated each day. The overall index, as well as geographic sub-indices by U.S. region and by state, are available each day at http://venturewire.com/index.
"Despite the recent slowdown in investment activity, nearly every metro area on the list showed an increase over their totals from a year ago. New York benefited from strong investment in the Internet services sector, specifically financial services," Andersen said. "But Boston’s strength in networking technology may push it back up the list as Internet investment continues to decline."
Atlanta and Dallas also enjoyed strong years, vaulting into the top ten from their positions at 12 and 13, respectively, a year ago. "Both areas benefited from strong investment in the telecommunications sector," said Andersen.
